Entrance Requirements

1. Direct Entry

M.Sc.: Usual requirements for entrance are a primary degree (minimum level: 2nd Class Honours) in a field of study in the human sciences.
Postgraduate Diploma: Usual requirements for entrance are a primary degree in a field of study in the human sciences. Learners who achieve a postgraduate Diploma with First or Second Class Honours may be admitted to the M.Sc. programme.
Foundation/ Intermediate Level Professional Training Programme: Same as entry to Postgraduate Diploma.
Professional Training Programme: Successful completion of Foundation / Intermediate Level Professional Training

2. Indirect Entry

Recognition Prior Learning (RPL) Applicants who are not entitled to direct entry may be considered for entry on the basis of their prior learning, that is their knowledge and skills acquired through life, work experience and study, not attested through formal certification. Applicants will be considered provided they can demonstrate equivalence to Direct Entry Requirements which can be verified through the Clanwilliam Institute RPL process. Applicants who are considering application through this route are encouraged to make informal enquiries to the Head of Training, and to consult with the HETAC Policy Document on Prior Experiential Learning available at: http://www.hetac.ie/docs/hetac_learning_policy.pdf.

Applicants will be required to satisfy the Head of Training and the Programme Committee as to their academic capacity to undertake a programme of learning at level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications (i.e. Postgraduate Diploma / Masters Level training).
An RPL policy and procedures document has been drafted and is available from the Institute.

Note:
- Under Institute RPL procedures, a Support Person is available to assist RPL applicants
- RPL applications take a minimum of 6 weeks to prepare and one week for a decision. Therefore RPL applications should commence at least 7 weeks prior to the closing date for direct entry applications. (22nd May in 2008). Late applications may result in less time for preparation of portfolio.

All applicants are required to be in a work setting or role which will provide opportunities for the learner to implement the learning from the programme, such as counselling, psychotherapy, support services, or project/community work in either a paid or voluntary position.
For non-native English speakers tested evidence of competency in English is required.
All candidates will be interviewed to assess their suitability for the programme. Candidates wishing to progress to Advanced Level Professional Training will also be interviewed. At first interview candidates are expected to demonstrate:

  • An interest and engagement with the field of psychotherapy and with the Institute’s approach and ethos;
  • A reflexive awareness of their own learning experience;
  • A willingness to engage with supervisory and support structures;
  • A sensitivity to group and team processes.

Candidates wishing to progress to Advanced Level Professional Training will be required to attend for an interview at the completion of Year 2.  The emphasis in this interview will be on clinical competency and therapeutic skills.

Progression through the Programme.
The Routes and Entry requirements are summarised in the following table:

The usual pathways are:

  • Postgraduate Diploma/ Foundation and Intermediate Professional Training Levels in Systemic Psychotherapy (years one and two) => M.Sc

or

  • Postgraduate Diploma/ Foundation and Intermediate Professional Training Level in Systemic Psychotherapy (years one and two) => M.Sc./ Professional Training in Systemic Therapy (part 1)  (year three) =>Professional Training in Systemic Therapy (part 2) (Year 4)

or

  • Postgraduate Diploma/ Foundation and Intermediate Professional Training in Systemic Psychotherapy (years one and two) =>Professional Training Level in Systemic Therapy (years 3 and 4)

Entrance to the MSc. Pathway: This requires direct entry requirements or equivalent, or direct entry requirements to and achievement of honours on the Postgraduate Diploma.
Entrance to Professional Level Training. Applicants are required to attend for interview following successful completion of Intermediate Level Professional Training at end of Year 2.

N.B.  It is a requirement for the course to proceed that a sufficient number of suitably qualified, eligible candidates accept offers of places. The minimum cohort required is 10.

Calendar
Note: The academic year runs from late September to the end of May but arrangements will sometimes be made for sessions and/or team-work to extend beyond these dates.

Year One 30 ACCS credits: Hours requirements are as follows:
Seminars: 50 hours. Clinical Group 35 hours. PPD Group: 15 hours. Self Directed Learning: 500 hours
Year 1 Learners will be divided into two supervision teams. Work during the year will sometimes happen in the supervision team and at other times will be organised to happen with both teams working together in one large group

Year Two 30 ACCS credits: Hours requirements are as follows:
Seminars: 60 hours Clinical Group: 150 hours PPD Group 20 hours Self Directed Learning: 400 hours.
There are usually two supervision groups meeting on the same day as the seminars – one from 8.00a.m. to 1.00p.m. and the other from 4.30p.m. to 9.30p.m.  Applicants should indicate their preferred time option although it may not be possible to accommodate all preferences.  Final decisions rest with the Institute.

Year Three 60 ACCS credits:  Hours requirements are as follows:
Seminars: 76 hours Clinical Group: 150 hours PPD Group 20 hours. Self Directed Learning: 980 hours
(Note extra learner effort and commitment are required for learners to produce a dissertation in this year)
There are usually two supervision groups meeting on the same day as the seminars – one from 8.00a.m. to 1.00p.m. and the other from 4.30p.m. to 9.30p.m.  Applicants should indicate their preferred time option although it may not be possible to accommodate all preferences.  Final decisions rest with the Institute.
The seminars take place from 2.00p.m. to 4.00p.m. each week.

Year Four Hours requirements are as follows:
Seminars: 14 hours Clinical Group/ Supervision: 132 hours PPD Group 20 hours Work based clinical practice: 200 Self Directed Learning: 160 hours
This year, which includes work-based learning, has a variable structure that takes into account requirements of learners and their employers. Planning for this year begins at first year stage.

The PPD groups will take place at times yet to be agreed
Holidays: All holiday-periods are scheduled to coincide with the dates advised for schools by the Department of Education.  Thus there is usually a 2-week break at Christmas and at Easter, with mid-term breaks in Terms 1 & 2

Fee: Provisional, subject to change
Although fees for each year of the programme have not yet been finalised, it is likely that they will be of the following order:
Year 1 €5500
Year 2 €8000
Year 3 €8000
Year 4 The cost of this year is difficult to calculate at this point but we are giving a guide figure of €6000 for now.

In addition examination fees are payable to HETAC- in the region of 200 euro.

It is our intention that the fee structure will be finalised by June when the intake-interviews will be held.

Application Procedure

Completed application forms together with curriculum vitae, personal statement and the names of two referees/supervisors who are familiar with your work and/or academic abilities, should be submitted to the Training Department.  An application processing fee of €75 is required.

An applicant who wishes to be considered under RPL entry requirements will be charged an RPL application processing fee of €100.  Application for entry to the training programme will also incur that application processing fee of €75.
